A Day at the Dog Park

Every Saturday & Sunday I take my dogs to a dog park. Its not just any dog park. It is a greyhound only dog park that is at the Friends of Greyhounds compound in Hialeah, Florida.  Every Saturday & Sunday Friends of Greyhounds has an open house from 10 AM until 3 PM for people to come see the dogs that are available for adoption.  People with greyhounds can bring their dogs to hang out and play.

Originally I started to visit because I felt it was safer than any public dog park. I started taking my dogs there more frequently and for longer visits until I realized I might as well help out and I became a volunteer. Now, on a typical weekend we get to the dog park early so I can fill the water buckets, clean the benches and pick up doggie droppings. I spend the rest of the day greeting people and their dogs and supervising the dogs.

May times people who are just driving by see us and stop in to see the dogs. There are also many people who bring their greyhounds every weekend. Also, volunteers bring their dogs and leave them with me while they are taking care of the 40-50 dogs that are waiting to be adopted.

If it starts to rain or if a dog seems to be getting too hot I take them into the office.  I’ll leave that for a future blog entry.
